Payment issues and duplicate charges
Since all payments go through the App Store, billing issues are handled by Apple. But here's how to sort out the common ones.
Payment failed
Apple will retry automatically. If it keeps failing:
- Open System Settings > Apple ID > Payment & Shipping.
- Make sure your card is valid and not expired.
- Try a different payment method or add an App Store gift card balance.
- Apple sometimes puts a temporary hold – check with your bank.
Charged twice
This is rare but it happens. Check a few things first:
- Are you sure it's two charges, not one charge plus a pending authorization? Pending charges disappear in a few days.
- Check if you accidentally subscribed on two Apple IDs.
- Look at App Store > profile > Purchase History for details.
If it's genuinely a double charge, go to reportaproblem.apple.com and report it. Apple will refund the duplicate.
Charged after cancelling
You're billed for the current period when you cancel – cancellation takes effect at the end of that period. So if you cancelled on day 2 of a monthly cycle, you still have access (and were charged for) the full month.
If you were charged for a new period after cancelling, something went wrong. Check your subscriptions in System Settings and contact Apple support.
